BA (Hons) Creative Writing
BA (Hons) English & Creative Writing
At the University of Bolton we offer courses that focus on the needs of the students, developing creativity and originality. Through the study of conventions and techniques used by published and produced writers, and through the practice of craft skills, we aim to make you the best writer you can be.
All our lecturers are experienced, practising writers whose achievements make up an extensive record of published, produced and award-winning work. They are able to draw on a wealth of professional contacts in publishing, theatre, film, radio, poetry and community-based writing to ensure that the curriculum reflects current practice in the industry. Work-based learning is part of our core curriculum and we have been able to offer placements in theatre, radio, television, publishing, schools, libraries, festivals and writing development agencies.
We have a close partnership with the Bolton Octagon Theatre, one of the leading regional theatres in the country. Students get to know how the theatre operates, and how theatre writing is flourishing today. There is an annual showcase of students’ work that takes place there and The Octagon Prize for writing drama is awarded annually. 2016 will also see the launch of a significant poetry prize, The Bolton Poetry Competition. There is also a series of readings by professional poets and prose writers that can help inspire your own work and develop your own contacts. The work related study we offer our students is invaluable and can lead to careers in writing, teaching, arts administration, and working in other creative and digital industries.
