Live Literature returns in new virtual format for Autumn/Winter 2020

The University of Bolton’s English and Creative Writing department are proud to again deliver a new season of exciting live literature events this Autumn/Winter 2020. In this digital era necessitated by COVID-19, we are determined to continue to bring great literature and new writing to students, staff, and the wider Bolton community. This season’s events will be delivered by Zoom and, as always, are free to all.

Recent Live Literature events have brought some of the most exciting new literary names to Bolton, including Booker Prize longlisted novelist Ian McGuire, and a scintillating performance of Cathy Crabb’s gritty two-hander, The Bubbler. Our very own Creative Writing lecturer Ben Wilkinson also hosted the launch of The Result is What You See Today, a new anthology of poems about running, endorsed by Commonwealth gold medal winner Jo Pavey MBE.

For the first event of this new season on Tuesday 6 October, the young writer Derek Owusu will be reading from his scintillating novel, That Reminds Me. Derek will also talk to Valerie O’Riordan about this coming-of-age story, one that The Guardian has described as “a fresh and powerful debut”.

On Tuesday 3 November, we will be treated to script-in-hand performances of the scriptwriting of two exciting writing talents and recent Bolton graduates, Kate Jones and Penelope Alonso-Ritchie. Excerpts from two distinctive plays, Annie is Not Okay and Fragments, will be presented, and the audience will also gain insight into the scriptwriting process.

The season concludes on Tuesday 8 December with our very own English lecturer Evan Jones. He will launch two volumes: his highly anticipated second volume of poetry, Later Emperors, and a translation of the Greek poet C P Cavafy, The Barbarians Arrive Today. Jones will read from his new collections, praised by POETRY magazine editor Don Share as works of “a deeply distinctive literary wit”.
